Participation Guidelines
• This is an absolutely open competition, with no
participation restrictions like age, pro/amateur status, shakuhachi style,
nationality, etc. Choice of standard, long or short flute, five
hole/seven hole, etc. is up to the participant.
• Registration Process: Fill out the application
form and send it in with your shakuhachi solo (no accompaniment of any kind,
live or recorded) recording of five (5) minutes or less. Any content is
acceptable; classical, modern, folk, original, etc. Segments of longer pieces
are also acceptable. Email (mp3, etc.) or mail (CD, mini-disk, etc.) your audition
recording with the application form and fee.
• Registration Time-frame: Jan. 1, 2012 –
Feb. 29, 2012
• Registration Fee: 5,000yen (JY) to be paid at time
of registration by PAYPAL to the account below.
• Preliminary Judging: Preliminary judging of recordings
will take place in March. Depending on the number of participants, up to 30
participants will be selected to perform in the final competition in Kyoto on
May 31. Preliminary results will be reported to all participants as soon as
they are determined, and will also be announced on the sponsorfs website and in
the April, 2012 issue of Hogaku Journal.
• NOTE: For all participants in foreign countries
who reach the finals, a travel support stipend of up to $500US (depending on
origin of travel) will be provided.
• Final Competition Format: Each participant
performs two pieces.
1. Individual Choice Piece (5 minutes): shakuhachi solo
(no accompaniment of any kind, live or recorded). Any content is acceptable;
classical, modern, folk, original, etc. At the participantfs discretion, the
solo may or may not be the same piece used in the preliminary event.
2. Required Ensemble Piece (to be selected by the
performer from two modern options/ 3 minutes): Options are (A) a new work for
shakuhachi, koto and shamisen composed by Kumiko Takahashi, or (B) a new work
for shakuhachi, koto and bass koto (17 string koto) composed by Tomoko
Maeda. Sheet music and midi recordings for these pieces will be posted on
the sponsorfs website on December 1, 2011.

• Participants will have 30 minutes each for live
practice of the ensemble piece they select, either on the morning of the Finals
competition or the day before, at Otani Hall. The sponsor will provide several
teams of accompanists and specify which team will accompany which participant.
• Judges: Kaoru Kakizakai, Yôdô
Kurahashi, Ryôzan Sakata, Takafumi Tanaka (Hogaku Journal), Shôzan
Tanabe, David Kansuke Wheeler, Satomi Fukami (koto), Dôzan Fujiwara,
Ichizan Hoshida, Mitsuzuka Yukihiko (except for Tanaka and Fukami, all shakuhachi
players).

• Master of Ceremonies: Christopher Yohmei
• Prize Money: 1st 1,000,000yen, 2nd 300,000yen, 3rd 100,000yen,
Encouragement Prizes (Japanese Music Association Price 50,000yen, Hogaku Journal
Prize 50,000yen). In addition to these Best Solo and Best Ensemble prizes are
also being considered.
